Dealing with the cold is a challenge that most pond fish owners deal with. One of the gadgets you will need when your pond freezes is a de-icer. In this product review, we talk about one of these de-icer products in this post- the K&H Pond De-icer. How well does it work?
Problems With Some De-Icers
If ponds freeze completely, then it can kill your fish. A pond de-icer is used to keep a consistent hole melted in your ice to allow air to escape. Some de-icers are known for getting too hot, though. If it gets too hot, then they can do damage to your pond liner and harm your fish.
Another problem with these gadgets is that some of them take a lot of electricity. You don’t want tens or hundreds of dollars being poured into keeping your de-icer running.
Another thing to ponder is what if your pond is already frozen over before you think to put your device in, what then? Pond owners worry about this because time is of the essence. Your fish can die from gases being trapped under the ice. Does this de-icer help with this problem?
K&H Thermo-Pond Perfect Climate Deluxe Pond Deicer Overview
K&H Pet is a company that specializes in various pet products-specifically warming devices for ponds, cats, dogs, and birds. That’s what a de-icer is. It’s a warming device. Since it is for other pets also, if you have dogs or cats, you’ll find their site as quite a treat too. You can check them out at the K&H website.
They also have a company site they have. It’s http://www.khmfg.com, it’s not a secure site though. Sites that don’t begin in https can be easily hacked so I wouldn’t visit it just to stay on the safe side. Just sayin’.
Now for the product…
The de-icer from K&H is a pretty good product for what it does. It does keep a hole melted in the pond so gases can escape and oxygen can make it to your beloved fish. It isn’t, however, the sturdiest of de-icer gadgets on the market.
A common problem with this de-icer is that it doesn’t have longevity. The reviews on Amazon repeatedly mention how it lasts for one season and it quits on them. It will work great for this first season, but it deteriorates when stored back over the Spring, Summer, and Fall times.
There are more positive, beaming reviews over the negative ones though. The de-icer does more than just leave a hole in the water. It also has the effect of warming the water around it. Fish gather around it and the heat is spread out enough for all of them to cozy around it.
What If Your Pond Is Already Froze Solid?
The K&H deicer solves this problem well. Just fill a bucket with water and put it on the ice first. Once you have the hole in the ice melted, then put the deicer in it. Gradually, you will get a nice hole.
Important: Make sure your de-icer device is in the water before you turn it on. Turning it on while on land isn’t good for it.
Electricity used with this ice-melting gizmo isn’t bad. This gadget will cover ponds from 100 to 750 gallons capacity. Check how large your pond is. The K&H brand pond de-icers have products that will work in ponds up to 1200 gallons in volume.
The Good & the Bad

- 2-year warranty
- Easy to use
- Good price
- It’s a floating de-icer out of the box, but switches to submersible with click-button ease.
- Easy maintenance and cleaning
- Amazon seller doesn’t have contact details for some reason
- Have to contact the dealer if product is damaged and still under warranty
- Some have reported the caging as flimsy
Who is the K&H Thermo Pond De-icer For?
The K&H DeIcer is a good match for anyone who want’s to keep their pond fish alive during the Winter freezes. It isn’t expensive and doesn’t consume electricity too bad so it’s a good product for the budget-conscious.
Since they have had problems with their metal housing deteriorating, they have since made improvements on the caging design.
If you use the de-icer properly it should last a few winters. If it breaks down in less than two years, then you can take up their two-year warranty. Check the Care and Instructions tab on this URL for how to properly take care of your device.
K&H Thermo Pond De-icer Features
Some nice features that it has includes the ability to change it from a floating contraption to a submersible one with the flick of a switch. The K&H Pond De-Icer has a sturdy cord that is 12 feet in length. It has a thermostat that goes on and off as the temperatures fluctuate.
This de-icer goes off whenever the temperature picks up and back on when it goes down.
K&H Thermo Pond De-icer Support
A good support staff stands behind their product.
The Amazon Seller Leaves No Digits:
Some of the Amazon customers reported that their product broke down, wanted a replacement due to it still being under warranty. The seller has no contact information on Amazon so they worried that they won’t be able to get another one.
Luckily, people answered their problems telling them that K&H still honors their warranty. The company is really good about replacements. If you visit their website that I named earlier in this post they will take care of you.
The problem with the metal caging crapping out… No company want’s the bad publicity of seeing problems in their products and doing nothing to improve upon them.
Negative reviews after negative reviews on Amazon mentioned the metal caging failing to hold up right. Good news is that that the company saw these bad reviews and made improvements to the design.

My Final Verdikt of the K&H Thermo Pond De-icer
I wasn’t going to give this product a high score due to the Amazon complaints. It seems the company fixed the problem though so I am giving it a better score than I would have.
This specific de-icer opens up a large swath of warm water even if its main job is just to keep a hole in the ice. So this is a cool bonus-see what I did there.
This ice-melting, pond-warming, and fish-friendly gadget will do the job. Make sure to read the instructions and NEVER and I mean NEVER plug it in before it is submerged in water. They will get hot enough to burn the plastic off the housing and burn you too in the process if you run them in the air.
There must be a reason for most people having a good experience with the product and others having problems. It’s the same product for both groups. My only conclusion can be that the ones with the great experiences used it right and the ones with problems misused it.
