The Aquascape 300-Watt Pond De-icer

A de-icer is a great way to keep a hole in your ice to keep your koi from being killed by gas buildup. Koi are known to produce a lot of waste and that also means making a lot of gas. This gas can build up if your pond freezes over.

There is a technique to melting the ice that many other koi pond and garden pond owners do if they don’t have a de-icer on hand. Take a bucket, filling it with extremely hot water, and taking it out to put on the pond wherever they want the hole to be. This can be a hassle in the zero-degree temperatures, though

Pond de-icers are electrical devices that you put in your pond and they heat up a small portion of your pond to allow these harmful gases to escape. They automate the ice-melting process! Not all de-icers are created equal though. Is the Aquascape de-icer up to the job?

You might have seen this Aquascape product advertised somewhere on the web. Usually, people you see advertising it are affiliated with the product in some way. For example, you may have seen a Youtube ad such as this:

This is a member of the Aquascape Pond Squad, or in other words, a company representative. This guy is an employee of the company who makes the product. That means you should take his advice with a grain of salt since he has a lot to gain from painting their products in as positive of a light as possible.

However, I also happen to be an affiliate, but with one main difference. I don’t work for the company. I have nothing to gain from writing a rosy review of a product if it turns out to be crap. In fact, doing this might hurt me more than help because you might buy from me once and not trust me again and not buy from my affiliate site again. That would be detrimental to my interests.  Anyhow, back to the topic at hand.

What makes the Aquascape 39000 de-icer so special? A unique feature on this device is the lights that determine whether it’s on or off. A red light on top tells you it’s on and blue light means it is off. It also has a longer electric cord than most other models.

It also has a longer electric cord than most other de-icer models. It is 22 feet in length. This gives you a higher chance of being able to reach an electrical outlet without the assistance of an extension cord.

The warranty. This item has a limited 3-year warranty on it. If it gives out on you and it’s found not to be due to improper handling they will likely replace the product. I don’t know if they will give refunds though. You can ship it back to them and they will look at it and replace it if necessary. I would keep your packaging for this reason.

Is It Energy-Efficient?

The product only puts out 300 watts of electricity when it’s running. When it’s warmer you obviously won’t need it at all. This should not add to your electric bill too dramatically.

It has a nice stainless steel construction that keeps the de-icer gadgets housing from melting. This has been a problem with other flimsier de-icers that I read Amazon reviews about. This is another advantage this product has going for it. It stands up to years of wear and tear.

Who Is The Aquascape 39000 for?

In the sub-zero winter temperatures, pond owners need something to keep their ponds from freezing into a solid block of ice.

This is why from the get-go pond experts always advise first-time fish pond owners to build their ponds so they are 3 ft. deep or deeper. This is specifically for the pond to be too deep to freeze solid.

This lets the top part freeze but still has a watery underside. This allows the koi and other fish to nestle in the bottom part of the pond. What about their oxygen needs and the problem of gas buildup that naturally happens in this situation though?

De-icers like Aquascapes solve this part of the problem by melting a hole in the ice to provide gas exchange and let atmospheric oxygen into the water because let me tell you a secret. Fish breathe too. They take the oxygen from the water into their gills to breathe.

The Aquascape de-icer gadget helps the person with a koi pond that is pretty far away from an electrical socket due to the 22-foot long cord. Some models have cords that are only 12-15 feet long depending on the brand. You might not even need an extension cord with this model.

If your pond is near a window then you will be able to tell if your de-icer model is on or off. Just look outside and see to it that your de-icers light is red and not blue. Red means it’s working its magic.

This Above Is The Sales Pitch Aquascape Would Like Me To Stop At, but I don’t work for them so…

Why I Think There’s Trouble In Them Waters

Most people with a positive experience with the product were from colder regions. On Amazon itself, there were too many 1-star ratings. Just 52% of verified purchasers gave it the coveted 5-stars. Just over 50%. Any of you who went to school know 52% is a failing grade.

Unlike other models of its type, the name of this product indicates it is a pond heater too. I think this means it is supposed to heat your pond over-all and not just melt a hole in your ice. Correct me if I’m wrong below in a comment.

Unless you have a tiny, tiny pond I don’t know if this is possible using just a 300-watt unit. For comparison, cattle troughs, which are much tinier than garden ponds usually, are heated with heaters utilizing 500-1500 watts of power. Honestly, I think they ought to take “pond heater” off their product name.

When Is the best time to start up your Aquascape de-icer?

The de-icer doesn’t work unless it has ice or really cold water temperatures around it. You have to assess your pond regularly to check for ice formation. According to Aquascape, the gadget won’t shut off until its internal temperature reaches 70 degrees, so it’s likely to be running when it doesn’t need to be.

That’s another point of contention with this product. It’s not as hands-off as many other models.

I would be more cautious about using this de-icer model than with other models I’ve reviewed. Just to be safe, make sure your pond is ice-cold before you plug the unit in to be more energy-efficient. It might run all the time otherwise.

How do you best use the Aquascape 39000 de-icer?

It is a good idea to be using a pond aerator in addition to this device. Aquascape has a pond aerator that they sell separately. If you have koi you will need an aerator anyway. They require a lot of oxygen.

Since this doohickey doesn’t shut off until it reaches a 70° internal temperature unplug it when it isn’t freezing. You don’t need it except for the sole purpose of melting away a hole in a solidly frozen pond. Otherwise, it’s fine to go de-icerless.

The Good

  • Nifty little on/off light indicator
  • Solid steel construction
  • Long electric cord

The Bad

  • 5-Star ratings on Amazon are just over 50%, not a good sign!
  • Stays on well past when it needs to shut off
  • It seems to work only in Antarctic-like climates. Not for mild winters.
  • Company not responsive on Amazon

Where can you get your own Aquascape 39000?

If you want an Aquascape 3900 de-icer of your own, then you can get one on Amazon. It has its own share of fans that have been delighted with it. It also has its critics of which I am a member.

Type “pond de-icer” into Amazon and you’ll see many pond de-icing gadgets including the one in this review. Research them, read reviews, and see the many unique features of all of them to decide which one would best suit your needs.

Final Thoughts

At first, I thought they made improvements on their de-icing product over time to satisfy their current customer base. Not so Jack! One buyer with a bad taste left in her mouth from her purchase was from April 5, 2020. That’s last month as of this writing.

One good point that Aquascape makes is that if you live in a gardening zone above USDA zone 5 it is best to pair the de-icer with a good aerator for best results.

Maybe, after reading all of this, you still decide the Aquascape de-icer would do fine for you. That’s fine and dandy. Just click below to go to Amazon and make your problem of a solidly frozen pond a thing of the past.

Hope you’re doing well. To use a de-icer you have to put it in the water and turn it on. It’s best to anticipate winter chills in advance so you turn it on and have it going before everything freezes over. Since this isn’t always possible and your pond freezes over before you can start your pond de-icer you can pre-melt a hole using a bucket with very hot water in it. Once you have the ice melted a little and a watery hole is formed you can set the de-icer in the water and power it up. There’s not much to it. All it has to do is keep a hole melted around it in order to let gases escape.

  2. Hi Randal

I can understand why you need  to de-ice a section of your pond to help your fish especially koi. I know water is a strange substance, where its density is maximum at 4 degree Celsius  and this temperature allows fish to survive. Otherwise they cannot survive if the water is frozen. Ice will only be present to a certain depth, where the temperature increase with depth.

Can 300W unfreeze water and the answer is no, as only little will be. It is easy  to  calculate how much ice will melt all you need to know is the latent heat of fusion. You will find out that the device will be needed to be turned on for a while, which will not be energy efficient.  I can also see it may harm the fish, so will they  be harmed if they touch the device?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • Hi Antonio, and thanks for replying. There’s not enough heat in these deicers to harm your fish. What some customers keep saying is it just stops working altogether in a short time. 300 watts of energy isn’t a lot of power because you don’t need a lot to just melt a little hole in the ice.

If you’re saying 300 watts will not melt ice then I don’t know about that. It seems to work fine and dandy for some.

The thing is, it needs to work when it’s supposed to though. I’ve heard too many bad reports about it not working and the customer service being lousy when customers reported it. It has its share of fans too though I might add. I don’t know if they hired some bad employees that did sloppy work, or if it’s in the design itself that makes for such hit-or-miss results. All I know is the track record isn’t there for my recommendations.

  3. My Dad has a pond with koi carp and large goldfish in, in the winter months it freezes over quite often and when it thaws sometimes some of the fish are dead, now I know why. Reading your article has given me lots of information to share with my Dad. Neither of us New this sort of item existed. You don’t recommend this product so we will Look for a better quality one. I’m very happy to have read your post.

Would this Aquascape 300 watt pond de iced be suitable if you don’t live in a very cold country like the UK?

    • Yeah, I don’t get how some people are as pleased as punch with their Aquascape de-icers and having no problems with them and some others have some that give out after a couple of weeks. It baffles me. Maybe they made some bad hiring decisions and sloppy craftsmanship resulted. No telling honestly.

I think you are right on in giving some other deicer a try if your in the UK. I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t shut off until it reaches the internal temperature of Springtime. Most other models shut themselves off after they get just above freezing.

  4. Thank you for this review of the aquascape 39000 300-watt de-icer. I can really use on e of these for my Koi pond. With the 3 year warranty it looks like a great buy. Great construction is a must for me as it needs to be durable. I’m not worried about the cons you have pointed out here. The pros outweigh the cons so I think this will be a good one for me. Thank you.

    • The Aquascape has its share of good features. Some people loved their experience using it with no problems whatsoever. The warranty is a “limited” 3-year warranty. I don’t really know what that means. Your point about great construction is spot-on. I hope you have a wonderful experience with it.

  6. Hey nice article you have there. The Aquascape 300 watt pond De icer is very important in keeping fish alive during the cold Winter, so therefore it is ideal to leave a small hole in the surface of the pond for necessary gas exchange that will takes place. I have not engage my Aquascape with pond aerator before, from your description, it seems it has a lot of benefit, surely gonna give it a trial.

    • Hey there,

How’s it going with you? I am happy that you decided to go and get your de-icer. I like the TetraPond 300-watt de-icer myself. I did a review of it on my website if you’d like to check it out. Anyway, I’m glad you are aware of the problem that happens whenever a fish pond freezes completely over.

      Thanks for your thoughts.

  7. Hello there thanks for this review on this device. i must say it was really helpful. i think the aquascape pond de-ice is one of the most essential devices every pond owner should have to prevent fish loss during extremely cold weather. Before now i could record fish loss in my pound but after a friend of mine recommended this device to me, I was able to solve the problem.

    • Well, there are better brands in my opinion. Any of them are better. If you do decide to get this de-icer, then I highly recommend getting a pond aerator or bubbler to assist it. I’m glad you stopped by and good luck.

    • Hey there Sheddy

I’m glad to have been the one to inform you what a de-icer is and what it does. If you have a fish pond that the whole top freezes over they have no way of getting oxygen and are stuck under the ice with seadly gases building up. The de-icer, and an aerator of some kind, helps melt a little hole to get the koi and other fish a little “breathing room”.
